It started out as a late night “what if?” idea after a few drams. What if we distilled the most heavily-peated barley humanly possible, in the tall, narrow-necked Bruichladdich stills designed by the harvey brothers in 1881 to make the purest spirit possible? And here it is – the very first release of their legendary Octomore. Named for James Brown’s farm above Port Charlotte, and meaning in gaelic “the big eight” – an ancient measure of land.

This, the second Octomore release, came out at a whacking 140ppm, but their uniquely slow trickle-distillation and elegant stills bring a whole new dimension to peated whisky – all the heady, peat smoke aromas with an elegance and creamy texture that belie its age. On the basis of the previous year’s lesson, they felt they had no choice but to dial up the already titanic peating of their original malted barley to create another whisky benchmark. Again Bruichladdich blazes a trail where others can only follow. Octomore 02.1 / 140 ppm: the Usain Bolt of the whisky world! Very limited edition.

The extraordinarily haunting, towering Octomore spirit, again at 140ppm, but this time further matured in exceptional French oak casks from Bordeaux. The result is quite extraordinary – elegant peat smoke with lingering fruit, a coating of heathery honey and grind of black pepper for good measure. Reserve Cuvee cask maturation. Quite unique.

Octomore 07.3 is our uber-provenance single malt whisky crafted from malting barley grown on their friend James Brown’s Octomore farm. 07.3 was distilled in 2010 from grain harvested from a single field called Lorgba in 2009. The malt was peated to 169ppm and the spirit it gave matured on Islay for its entire life with casks of American oak being married to casks from the great Spanish wine growing region of Ribera del Duero.

The latest radical expression, Octomore 07.4, was distilled from barley peated to 167ppm and matured in virgin oak. A first for Octomore. In 2008 their distilling team quietly laid down another “what if?” project in the far corner of their 1845 Port Charlotte warehouses. What if we put 167ppm Octomore spirit into virgin oak casks? This was uncharted territory, the first time that spirit distilled from Scottish malting barley and peated to these colossal levels had been matured in fresh wood.

French Mourvedre – a red wine grape that has a reputation for producing intense red fruit, and strong, earthy, even gamey flavours. Austrian sweet wines – full bodied and charming with an ability to challenge convention with innovative techniques. French Sauternes – casks from the Graves section in Bordeaux that previously held some of the most revered and exclusive dessert wines the world has ever seen.

Initiation and provocation is followed by challenge. Growing barley on Islay is always difficult and yields are low. The autumn of 2010 was wet and windy. A late harvest saw Octomore farmer James Brown facing heavy losses from greylag geese and herds of wild red deer, resulting in a precious little yield. Malting the this Octomore grain produced results that were unprecedented, the readings came back at 309.1ppm. Following a carefully controlled trickle distillation, Octomore 08.3 was matured in 56% first fill Bourbon casks, the remaining in ex-Paulliac, Ventoux, Rhone and Burgundy casks.

The effect of virgin oak on whisky can be dramatic. Head Distiller Adam Hannett must balance the immense sensory force of the raw wood whilst retaining the subtle complexity of the Octomore spirit. The solution demands a complex cask management system. Although all of the spirit in Octomore 08.4 is eight years old just 20% has been held full-term in virgin oak. 80% was originally introduced to American oak, first-fill ex-Bourbon casks, before being transferred into the European virgin oak that had previously held Octomore 07.4.

Just 52 tonnes of precious Islay barley were malted to produce this single farm Octomore 09.3 edition. Raised in Irene’s Field on Octomore Farm in 2011, this uber-provenance single malt was later distilled and filled into 134 casks. Predominantly second-fill, the gentler influence of the wood allows more of the locally grown barley flavours to cut through the legendary peat smoke.

This spirit was distilled in December 2005 using malt peated to a colossal 167ppm. Filled into Fresh Bourbon and Grenache Blanc casks. In this second edition of ten year old, the unique texture of Octomore is lifted further by the smooth, sweet fruit of Grenache and engages perfectly with the phenolic depth. Just 18,000 bottles exist, presented at 57.3% alc.vol. with a splash of Islay spring water.

In only a few years, this quite exceptional spirit has built a towering reputation as a unique and highly sophisticated dram. This is a whisky for the connoisseur and the enlightened student of peat. Voted single malt of the year 2010 by Jim Murray, and only ever released at five years of age, the question has always been asked: “How will this incredible spirit develop with age?”. Now for the first time a lucky few will know. Only 6,000 bottles of this first Octomore 10 year old are being released, taking this new cult Islay whisky to another level. This expression is peated to 80.5ppm and bottled at 50% alc/ vol.

Our story begins at Feis Ile 2016, Adam Hannett’s first Masterclass as head distiller. There was a deal of expectation and Adam had indeed something special to share. It was Octomore; but not as we know it. The Octomore proposition had always been straightforward – mind and palate bending levels of peat, with the finesse and elegance of traditional Bruichladdich, bottled mostly at five years old. Sonnets in peat and barley. Now we present Adam’s Octomore “OBA Concept”, a limited distillery release of only 3,000 x 500ml bottles. Rare indeed.

Sitting alongside its 11s series counterparts, this Ten Year Old brings a subtler, more mature dimension to the otherwise youthful exuberance of the .1, .2 and .3 spirits. While we deliberately keep the barley influence forward in the .1 and .3 editions, our .2 and Ten Year Old editions introduce cask influence at varying ends of the Octomore age spectrum. While the malt for our Octomore Ten Year Old is initially higher in PPM, the influence of those 5 extra years results in a calmer, deeper spirit.

Building on the structural brilliance of our super heavily peated spirit, this Octomore 10.2 edition has spent the first four years of its life in fresh bourbon barrels, before being moved into exceptionally high quality, and incredibly rare Sauternes casks. The reputable chateau who originally managed these casks had filled them three times over with French sweet wine, allowing the oak to mellow and therefore temper its influence in our subsequent spirit. The combination of the softer smoke and oak influence has created a sublime balance with tropical fruit notes.

Distilled in 2013 from the 2012 harvest, the Octomore 10.3 has been brought home by farmer James Brown. Taking on the challenge of growing Islay Barley, he braces the conditions of the wet and wild west coast to combine an exploration of Islay terroir and stratospheric smoke.
For the first time, the .3 is matured for six aged years but crucially only in ex-American oak. These top-quality casks have gently coaxed this Octomore spirit into life in Warehouse 16, next to our 10.1 edition. The components of our 10.1 and 10.3 are so similar, the distinct flavour difference must be owed to the barley’s respective growing location.

Octomore has always challenged convention. Many preconceived ideas about whisky have been overturned but perhaps the most provocative stigma still to be shattered is that which surrounds age.
Distilled from Scottish barley in 2016, this three year old Octomore 10.4 is the youngest ever released, yet the most impressive. Standing alone in any heavyweight line-up, the depth, balance and composure of this Virgin Oak release is astounding.
Twenty-eight casks cut from Limousin oak have been subjected to a high toast before making their way to Warehouse 12 for filling. Their high tannic impact is subsided by a high toast level which gives way to a dry fruit character that is impeccably well-rounded.

Exposing the structural brilliance of our pure, unadulterated Octomore super heavily peated spirit, our 11.1 edition is powerful, understated and vibrant. Underpinned with a delicate balance of smoke and sweet vanilla from the ex-American oak casks, this single malt has spent just 5 years in contact with fresh first fill wood. The presence of peat on the palate is huge, and yet is incredibly balanced with clean fruit and floral notes. Distilled in 2014 from the 2013 harvest of 100% Scottish barley then filled into active ex-American oak, this high provenance, high peat single malt is a fitting embodiment of how quality ingredients demand less time to reach maturity.

Two parcels of alluring spirit were combined to create this Octomore 11.2. Distilled in the winter of 2014 from the 2013 harvest of 100% Scottish barley, our heavily peated Octomore spirit would take two different paths. Parcel One has spent 5 years full-term in ex-red wine casks from the Pauillac region of France. Parcel Two has spent 5 years in a combination of ex-American whiskey casks and ex-red wine casks from the St Julien region of France.

Comparing Octomore 11.1 and 11.3 gives one of our finest lessons in stratospheric smoke and barley terroir. While both editions are malted to a Brobdingnagian 100+PPM reading, the differences in barley character from the respective growing region is ever present. Our Octomore Islay barley is grown each year by friend and farmer James Brown, on Octomore farm itself. It is harvested, malted and distilled separately, even from our other Islay barley harvests, in order to become a single field, single vintage single malt.

Edition 12.1 The Impossible Equation
Nowhere is the dualism of their Octomore super heavily peated series more pertinent than in their .1 edition. Never as expected, delicate but powerful, this is unadulterated heavy smoke balanced with their vivacious and dynamic, fruity and floral distillate. While Octomore in itself does not conform to tradition, Bruichladdich’s Head Distiller Adam Hannett is inclined to mature Octomore .1 editions solely in ex-American whiskey casks for 5 vibrant years. Octomore 12.1 is the necessary control for the rest of the series, as experiments within an experiment, but their baseline should not be underestimated. Mainland grown Scottish barley is distilled in a patient and considered trickle. The stripped back maturation profile allows a sensory conversation that highlights the cereal-rich, malty notes of this barley-forward single malt. Vanilla, citrus and fudge culminate in an enigmatic challenge to received whisky wisdom.

Edition 12.2 The Impossible Equation
Octomore 12.2 follows in the footsteps of previous Sauternes legends. The now infamous Octomore 4.2 (Comus) became one of the most acclaimed and sought- after whiskies in our distillery’s portfolio, confirming that heavy peat smoke combined with sweet dessert wine of Sauternes is an incredible pairing. This Octomore 12.2 would spend three and a half years in ex-American oak casks, building a solid foundation of fruity and floral spirit in our lochside warehouses before being recasked in to impeccable quality Sauternes casks. The pivotal role of the Sauternes casks would add 18 months of supercharged fruit. Melon, white peach, honeysuckle and coconut add a real twist and sweetness to compliment the peat smoke of this heavily phenolic malt.

Edition 12.3
Octomore 12.3 is single vintage, single field, single malt. Raised in Church Field on Octomore Farm by friend and farmer James Brown, this Islay grown barley has been trickle distilled through our tall narrow necked stills just two miles from where it was grown. This terroir-driven spirit would take two separate journeys before being combined; 75% was filled into ex-American whiskey casks, while the remaining 25% spent five years maturing in genuine Pedro Ximenez Solera casks from Jerez bodega Fernando de Castilla. This Islay barley spirit has breathed slowly and delicately for five aged years, its salty citrus marine note resulting from the locale of where the barley was grown and our warehouses proximity to the sea. The Pedro Ximenez casks contribute sweet dried fruit notes which highlight the rich dry peat smoke of Octomore.
