D.C.S. Compendium
David C. Stewart MBE is one of the longest serving malt masters in the Scotch whisky industry, having worked with The Balvenie for 54 years. As he contemplates retirement it’s important to David that he passes on his knowledge so others can follow in his footsteps and continue to produce a whisky of exceptional quality. The Balvenie DCS Compendium is David’s handover of this knowledge in both written and liquid form. David has selected 25 extremely rare and significant vintage single cask whiskies to be released over five years, capturing the breadth of his achievement and contributions to his craft.

Tun batch
With over 50 years of experience, Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE possesses an unequalled knowledge of The Balvenie. For The Balvenie Tun, David hand-selects an assemblage of vintage casks from the distillery’s precious aged whisky stocks and fills them to Tun collection, housed in Warehouse 24. Three months later emerges this exceptionally complex and rare single malt Scotch whisky.
This is a rare interpretation of the marrying process, with each batch limited by the 8000L capacity of the tun itself, allowing these fine casks to come together to create a singular expression; a Balvenie greater than the sum of its constituent parts.

Single cask
The Balvenie Single Barrel First Fill is a single malt whisky, aged in a first fill, ex-bourbon cask. Almost all Scotch whisky is matured in casks previously used by Bourbon distillers. When brought to Scotland and used for the very first time they are known as ‘First Fill’.

Double wood
The Balvenie DoubleWood single malt whisky gains its distinctive character from being matured in two different wood types. Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt whisky.
The traditional casks soften and add delicate character, the sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavour and the final few months in our tuns allow the whiskies to marry harmoniously.

Triple Cask
The Balvenie Triple Cask range comprises of 12 year old, 16 year old and 25 year old single malt whiskies. It is created by combining The Balvenie that has matured in the three most traditional types of cask – first-fill bourbon, refill bourbon and sherry – in a large wooden vessel known as a marrying tun.
